When we think of hospices, we often imagine places filled with warmth, compassion, and care—where patients spend their final days surrounded by kindness and dignity. But what happens when those ideals fall apart? While most hospice staff and caregivers are angels on Earth, there are stories out there that reveal a darker side—a side that no one wants to imagine but is crucial to confront.

Here is the top 10 most horrific reports of abuse in hospices:

10. Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center Neglect

You're not going to believe what happened at the Colonial Heights Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Virginia. Back in December 2024, a whopping 18 staff members, including the director, were charged with felony charges for abuse and neglect. Why? They allegedly left a 74-year-old patient in her bed for days without proper care leading to severe wounds and sepsis.. To make matters worse, they were accused of fudging patient records and trying to cover their tracks.

The investigation uncovered a culture of neglect and a "don't care" attitude among the staff. Legal proceedings shed light on some serious issues in elder care and raised big questions about the responsibilities of nursing home staff.

9. Dawson Manor Patient Assault

In January 2025, a troubling incident unfolded at Dawson Manor in Georgia. Three Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs) reported that their colleague, 73-year-old Willie Pearl Green, allegedly assaulted an 83-year-old female patient. Witnesses claimed Green slapped the patient multiple times and handled her roughly during care routines, resulting in bruising and significant emotional distress. Green was subsequently arrested and faced charges of elder abuse and battery.

The victim's family expressed profound outrage and concern, emphasizing the lack of communication and transparency from the facility's administration. They reported difficulty obtaining clear answers and noted the absence of an apology from Dawson Manor or its corporate office. This distressing event underscores the critical need for stringent hiring practices, continuous staff training, and robust reporting mechanisms to prevent abuse in care settings.

8. Sicily's 'Care Home of Horrors'

In December 2020, Italian authorities uncovered a harrowing situation at the Suor Rosina La Grua hospice in Castelbuono, Sicily. An investigation revealed that 35 staff members were involved in the systematic abuse and torture of disabled patients. Patients were subjected to excessive medication without medical justification, physical restraints, and confinement in isolation rooms referred to as "Relax rooms," where they endured severe mistreatment. The staff members were arrested and faced charges of torture and mistreatment, leading to the seizure of the hospice's assets.

The coordinated nature of the abuse indicates a deeply entrenched culture of neglect and cruelty within the facility. The involvement of a large number of staff members suggests systemic failures in oversight and accountability. This case underscored the urgent need for reforms, stricter regulations, and vigilant monitoring to protect vulnerable populations from such egregious abuses.

7. Wisconsin Nurse's Unauthorized Amputation

In Spring Valley, Wisconsin, a distressing incident unfolded involving Mary K. Brown, a 38-year-old nurse at the Spring Valley Health and Rehab Center. In May 2022, Brown amputated the frostbitten foot of a 62-year-old hospice patient without obtaining his consent or securing a doctor's order. The patient had suffered severe frostbite, leading to necrotic tissue, but the foot remained partially attached. Brown proceeded with the amputation, later expressing a desire to display the foot at her family's taxidermy shop with a sign reading, "Wear your boots, kids." She was charged with mayhem, physical abuse of an elderly person, and intentionally causing great bodily harm.

The patient was admitted to the facility after a fall at his home, where he had been without heat, resulting in severe frostbite. The unauthorized amputation subjected him to additional physical trauma and potential complications, exacerbating his already fragile health condition. Brown's actions represent a blatant disregard for medical ethics and patient rights, leading to significant legal and professional consequences.

6. Hacienda HealthCare Sexual Abuse Case

In Phoenix, Arizona, a profoundly disturbing case emerged from Hacienda HealthCare, a facility entrusted with the care of individuals with severe disabilities. In December 2018, a 29-year-old female patient, who had been in a vegetative state since childhood, unexpectedly gave birth, shocking the facility's staff who were unaware of her pregnancy. This revelation led to an intensive investigation, culminating in the arrest of Nathan Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse responsible for her care. DNA evidence confirmed Sutherland as the father of the child, leading to charges of sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult. In September 2021, Sutherland pleaded guilty and was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison in December 2021.

The victim, a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, had been under the care of Hacienda HealthCare since the age of three. She was non-verbal and entirely dependent on caregivers for her daily needs. The fact that her pregnancy went unnoticed until she was in labor underscores significant lapses in the facility's monitoring and care protocols. This case prompted widespread media attention and led to calls for systemic reforms in care facilities to prevent such abuses in the future. Wikipedia
